...It started back in 1939...
The roots of Thornensians RUFC can be traced back to a pivotal decision made by Mr. J.E. Shipley-Turner, the former Headmaster of Thorne Grammar School. With a vision to broaden the sporting opportunities available to pupils and foster a deeper sense of discipline, teamwork, and physical development, Mr. Shipley-Turner made the bold move to replace Association Football with Rugby Union as the school’s principal winter sport. His decision not only transformed the school’s sporting culture but also laid the foundation for a tradition that would span generations.
The impact of this change was both immediate and lasting. Rugby quickly gained popularity among the students, many of whom continued to play the game after leaving school. It was from this growing enthusiasm and camaraderie that Old Thornensians RUFC was born—established by a group of former pupils who wished to carry on playing the sport they had come to love. The formation of the club in 1939 marked the beginning of what would become a proud and enduring legacy.
In recognition of his instrumental role in the sport’s introduction and development within the school and wider community, Mr. Shipley-Turner was appointed as the club’s first President. His early leadership and dedication helped cement the values that still underpin the club today—sportsmanship, inclusivity, and community spirit.
